week 7 (FYP 1)

For this week, I'm continue research about each part of hardware component. Main focus of this week are prepaying the proposal. I had to spend more time to finished this proposal. The due date for this assignment is week 8. More reference that I get from book and internet. below is some reference that I refer to finished this proposal.

Research of GSM Broadband

To design and developthis project, research for a few matters must be done to as the literature review like GSM broadband, NOKIA 3310 mobile phone, and other component that used for this project.

What is GSM?

In a book of  “IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS, VOL. 5, 208-218, SEPTEMBER 2004” describe a GSM (Global system for mobile communication) is a globally accepted standard for digital cellular communication. GSM is the name of a standardization group established in 1982 to create a common European mobile telephone standard that would formulate specifications for a pan-European mobile cellular radio system operating at 900MHz. A GSM modem is a wireless modem that works with a GSM wireless network. A wireless modem behaves like a dial-up modem. The main difference between them is that a dial-up modem sends and receives data through a fixed telephone line while a wireless modem sends and receives data through radio waves. The GSM modem is serially interfaced with the controller with the help of MAX 232. In the copyright 2000-2008, Mobitek System sdn bhd also describe the GSM modem is a specialized type of modem which accepts a SIM card, and operates over a subscription to a mobile operator, just like a mobile phone. Also as a telecommunication device, a wireless modem, that uses GSM wireless network. GSM Modem comes in various interfaces, such as PCMCIA Type II, USB, and Serial. When a GSM modem is connected to a computer, this allows the computer to use the GSM modem to communicate over the mobile network. While these GSM modems are most frequently used to provide mobile internet connectivity, many of them can also be used for sending and receiving SMS and MMS messages. However, some GSM Modems also has GPRS feature that allows transmission of data over TCP/IP (internet).
